MPs speak out about new accusations against federal politicians

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – Politicians in Ottawa are pushing ahead with possible legislation to crackdown on sexual harassment at federally regulated workplaces like financial institutions.

But the debate is happening as new accusations are being made against a Liberal MP and a former Conservative Member of Parliament.

As the political world is rocked by a growing number of sexual harassment and misconduct allegations, the NDP’s Tracey Ramsey says it’s appropriate the house is examining a bill that aims to protect victims and crack down on this type of behaviour.

“It really is something that needs to be handled now. And we can’t continue to wait because these stories, unfortunately… more are coming out every day,” says Ramsey.

There are new allegations against Liberal MP and former cabinet minister Kent Hehr, who is already under investigation. The prime minister wouldn’t comment on his way into work.

There are also questions about how the Conservatives handled sexual assault accusations against former MP and Ontario PC president Rick Dykstra, who Maclean’s reveals was allowed to still run as a candidate despite the serious claims.

There also appears there wasn’t a proper investigation into the complaint, which had also been filed with police.

Conservative House Leader Candice Bergen appeared bothered by the reports.

“I would find that very irresponsible that it was looked over. But I don’t know. I don’t know the facts. I don’t know who knew. I wasn’t privy to that discussion. I didn’t know about it. But going forward, this kind of thing has to stop.”

She says that situation would never happen under new leader Andrew Scheer.
