Officer seriously hurt after Trudeau motorcade-involved crash

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (NEWS 1130) – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s motorcade was involved in a crash last night in Simi Valley, California.

The accident happened just after the motorcade left the Ronald Reagan presidential library where Trudeau had given an address touting the benefits of the North American Free Trade deal.

A California Highway Patrol officer who was part of the motorcade was seriously injured when his motorcycle was hit by an SUV that made a left turn when police say it wasn’t supposed to.

“I spoke to the officers last night who were on the motorcade,” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti says. “The officer who went down has a broken clavicle but he’s going to heal and he’s going to be OK.”

Police say the SUV driver and her son were taken to hospital as a precaution to be checked out.

Trudeau says he’s thankful for the officers who risk their lives every day to protect others. “Certainly, I am constantly privileged to be surrounded by folks who put themselves at risk to keep us all safe,” he tells reporters.

The prime minister’s vehicle wasn’t involved in the accident, but officials say Trudeau is aware of what happened and his staff is in contact with local authorities looking into the incident.

Trudeau was in California giving an address touting the benefits of the North American Free Trade deal and met with Garcetti this morning for a media event and a hike.
