Vancouver’s 5th annual Step Up Challenge needs more teams

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Hikers looking for a way to stay dry this month can take part in Vancouver’s fifth annual Step Up Challenge stair climb.

Set for Sunday, February 25th, the charity event involves climbing the stairs of some of the tallest towers across Canada. Organizers need more participants so you have about two more weeks to train for it.

Funds raised go toward the Vancouver Prostate Centre — a well-respected treatment and research centre.

“For Vancouverites who talk endlessly about the challenge of climbing the Grouse Grind or working on improving their stamina at the gym, this is right up their alley and it’s fun to do,” says Mark Mahl, Western Canada Executive Director for Prostate Cancer Canada.

Only 14 teams have already signed up for the fundraiser.

Racers will make their way to the top of seven downtown high-rises including Harbour Centre, the Guinness Tower, Waterfront Centre and Park Place which –at 35-floors– is the tallest building.

“Not only do you get to race up some iconic skyscrapers with the support of your friends, but you’ll also be helping lead the way to a better tomorrow for Canadians,” Mahl says. “Prostate cancer affects one in every seven Canadian men at some time in their lives. As always, we recommend you see your doctor and get the checkup.”

Each team is required to raise at least $5,000 and must climb 5,000 feet –either together or in a relay format.

More than $200,000 has been raised over the last five years to help cure prostate cancer, which kills more than 4,000 men every year in Canada.
