Pressure mounts for BC to stop changing their clocks twice a year

By

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – With little more than two weeks to go before we have to shift all our clocks one hour ahead, the push continues to make 2018 the last time most British Columbians have to do that.

We have an update on a story that we’ve been working on since last fall.

Bob Dieno with the Kamloops-based group Stop the Time Change says significant progress has been made since Premier John Horgan told NEWS 1130 last year he’s willing to consider it. “We’ve got our fingers crossed, along with a lot of other people [that] we’re going to be able to move this to the next step.”

That next step is Friday when he meets with Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General Mike Farnworth at his constituency office in Port Coquitlam to present him with a petition containing more than 28,000 signatures.

“The message came loud and clear BC residents wanted to do this. I’d love to know how many emails Premier [John] Horgan got when he asked people to do it. The passion to stop this time change is definitely out there.”

He thinks people are tired of changing their clocks back and forth. “Three years ago, we didn’t think we would get anywhere and with the change of government, Premier Horgan, we were told he was overwhelmed with emails to the point he asked people to stop sending him about it. There’s definitely some interest there.”

A similar campaign in Alberta failed after airline operators and some professional sports teams complained about the changes hurting their schedules.

Dieno adds a private member’s bill tabled last year by a Liberal MLA has support from the Green Party, so he’s hoping to get some good news on Friday.

The next time we have to move all our clocks forward an hour is Sunday March 11.
