Joint submission for Port Moody man who lit family home on fire, killed wife

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – A man who killed his wife by setting his family home on fire in Port Moody in 2016 should receive an 18-year prison sentence, according to lawyers for both Crown Counsel and defence.

The sides have made the joint submission in BC Supreme Court, but due to a publication ban, we can’t report on many of the details that were discussed before the judge. The ban is in place to help protect the identities of the children involved in the case.

It’s a horrifying case of extreme domestic violence. The man, whose name we can’t reveal, previously admitted to dousing his home in gasoline and setting it on fire with his family inside. His wife, who also can’t be identified, suffered burns to more than 90 per cent of her body before dying hours later in the hospital in July 2016.

Investigators discovered traces of gasoline on her body and elsewhere in the home.

At the time, shocking video of the crime surfaced as the home was engulfed and the several kids inside were seen jumping from the roof to safety.

The man was initially charged with second-degree murder but later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter and arson causing bodily harm. The judge can deliver a different sentence than what’s being asked in the joint submission but that only happens in rare cases and only if the judge thinks it’s appropriate.
