Trudeau waiting to see if Canada gets exemption from new US tariffs

TORONTO (NEWS 1130) – The prime minister is hoping the rumours are true. There is speculation Canada will be exempt from new tariffs on steel and aluminum expected to be announced by US President Donald Trump this afternoon.

When the tariff plan is unveiled, it’s believed that both Canada and Mexico could be given exemptions, with the condition that a new NAFTA agreement is signed with the US.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tells Breakfast Television Toronto that he’ll be waiting to see the details.

“The president has said if we get to a position where we have successfully renegotiated NAFTA, there won’t be any tariffs for Canada. We’re going to see what he actually announces… but we’re continuing to push on getting the right deal for Canada, getting the right deal for Canadians.”

“We’re going to stay focus on negotiating NAFTA, on improving NAFTA, on making sure that everyone gets included in trade deals,” adds Trudeau.

While Trump has tweeted that he will show flexibility to countries that treat the US fairly on trade a military issues, it seems with this administration, anything can change.

White House officials even say the specifics of the plan remain fluid and it’s unclear when they will be finalized.
