Early spring wildfire under control near Lytton

LYTTON (NEWS 1130) – We’re just less than a week into Spring and crews in BC have already dealt with a number of wildfires.

Fire Information Officer Jody Lucius says it’s not the first fire this year, the one burning near Lytton is one of the larger ones sparked so far in 2018.

“On March 21st, the BC Wildfire Service did respond to a wildfire approximately two kilometers northwest of the village of Lytton,” she says. “The fire is currently approximately 75 hectares and is under control.”

She says not unheard of to see wildfires in the Kamloops Fire Centre so early on in the year. “This particular fire was human-caused and a lot of the fires that we do see at this time of the year are human-caused, we don’t have as much lightning in the area,” Lucius explains. “So we do always ask the public to be vigilant in their use of fire.”

While the cause is believed to be human-caused, she adds it’s unclear what exactly sparked the flames.

Last summer, BC saw its worst wildfire season on record. Tens of thousands of people were displaced and more than a million hectares was burned between April and November.

“It is really early in the season for us to be looking at whether or not this fire is an indication of what we might expect for the fire season here within the Kamloops Fire Centre, however it isn’t unheard of to have fires at this time of year.”
