Suspect in beating of man with autism turns himself in

TORONTO – One of three suspects wanted in connection with the beating of a 29-year-old man with autism in Mississauga has turned himself in to police.
A Canada-wide arrest warrant was issued last week for Ronjot Singh Dhami, 25, of no fixed address. He has been charged with one count of aggravated assault. Dhami’s last known address is in Surrey.
Last week, Peel regional police told CityNews Toronto that Dhami’s lawyer was making arrangements for his client to surrender Monday morning. He turned himself in just after 5 a.m. local time.
Criminal lawyer Jag Virk previously said that although his client is turning himself in, Dhami is maintaining his innocence and is cooperating with police. However, the lawyer says Dhami claims he was not in the video of the attack, which was released by police.
The attack happened at a bus terminal around 10:45 p.m. on March 13.
A video of the attack showed the man sitting at the bottom of a stairwell putting on roller blades when three young men approached from behind and began to punch and kick him.
Police said the unidentified victim suffered a broken nose and cuts to the face.
On Friday, police arrested Parmvir ‘Parm’ Singh Chahill in Windsor, Ont., without incident. Chahill was also wanted on a Canada-wide arrest warrant and faces one count of aggravated assault.
Chahil spent the weekend in custody after a judge ordered him to return on Monday for a bail hearing, allowing a lawyer from B.C. to be in the court to represent him at that time.
Police also arrested Hardip Padda, 44, and Harmanovir Chahil, 18, both of Windsor, and charged them with accessory after the fact. The two are believed to be the mother and brother of the suspect.
Police have yet to identify the third male suspect, but say he may go by the name “Jason.”
