VPD giving out steering wheel locks

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The VPD wants to help keep your car off the hot sheet! The department is giving away free steering wheel locks.

“They’re anti theft devices or steering wheel locks. They’re going to be available at a number of our community police centres throughout the city,” says Cst. Jason Doucette.

“We’re targeting and encouraging people with older vehicles, especially like Honda Civics and Honda Accords and other vehicles from our top ten stolen list to simply stop by and pick one up for free.”

Basically anyone without an immobilizer in their car is being encouraged to come collect a free anti-theft device.

“If you fall within that category, and it doesn’t really matter if you’re not from Vancouver, if you’re coming down here and you’re parking in our area we’re not going to turn you away.”

Volunteers will also be on the lookout for vulnerable vehicles parked on the street and will leave owners vouchers that can be exchanged for an anti-theft device. There were just under 1,500 stolen vehicles across Vancouver last year.
