Several Safeway locations closing for good on the Lower Mainland

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – Attention Safeway shoppers: we now know which Safeway locations will be closing their doors forever on the Lower Mainland, following an announcement made by Sobeys Canada earlier this year.

Following stores will be closing their doors as of Jul. 5:

  • Safeway, Lougheed Mall, Burnaby
  • Safeway, Sunwood Square, Coquitlam
  • Safeway, Point Grey, Vancouver
  • Safeway, Royal Oak, Burnaby

Veteran mediator Vince Ready, who previously handled the BC teachers strike, is overseeing contract talks that could see the locations below re-open as FreshCo stores.

  • Safeway, Blundell, Richmond
  • Safeway, Broadmoor, Richmond
  • Safeway, Newton Town Center, Surrey
  • Safeway, Strawberry Hills, Surrey
  • Safeway, Mission

“We remain committed to working with the Unions and Vince Ready to reach the right deal that supports the future success of our stores, our employees and our ability to serve the Discount shopping needs of our customers,” says Sobeys Canada in a statement.

The Safeway at City Square in Vancouver, near 12th Avenue and Ash Street, will close on Jul. 28th.

In January it was revealed 10 locations would be closed after Empire Co., which also owns Sobeys, was struggling to integrate Safeway since buying the chain for $5.8 billion five years ago.
