Family with ties to Humboldt shares tips after hockey stick stolen, returned

MISSION (NEWS 1130) – They were just trying to show their support for those lost in the Humboldt bus crash, but according to a Mission woman, someone took advantage of that.

Shawna Grant put out a hockey stick as part of the #HumboldtStrong movement, but says a man stole it early this morning.

“We have the Ring camera system that gives you an automatic alert when there’s a motion at your front door,” she told NEWS 1130. “So my husband has an app on his phone that identified there was motion, so then you just play the video as it records what’s going on and we were able to establish that someone just simply walked straight up to the door, took the stick and left.”

Grant says she was devastated, especially since she feels a strong connection to Humboldt.

“Both of my parents were born and raised in Humboldt and surrounding area, so this tragedy has hit our household pretty hard. We are a hockey family. I grew up with a brother that lived on the road playing hockey, on buses all the time. We’ve got a lot of extended family that lives in the Humboldt area.”

It’s because of this that Grant says her family has taken a lot of initiative to fundraise for the Broncos as well as first responders.

But, this story has a happy ending. Grant says after reaching out to the community on Facebook, the stick was found and returned.

“Just after I spoke to the RCMP, my daughter received a message on the Mission Facebook neighbours site where we had first reported the story, and an individual who had seen our story came across the GoodLife Fitness bag described in our video, and there was a hockey stick laying on top of the bag. It was unattended and having read our story she picked up the stick, took it with her and then made contact with my daughter noting that she would like to return the stick to us.”

Grant adds the RCMP is continuing to look into thefts of this nature, but she has some tips to share.

“Obviously there are people who are willing to take absolutely anything from outside your residence. It’s unnerving to see people come right up to a front door so my tip would be to keep everything locked. Cars, houses, keep anything of any value in a place where people can’t just obtain it by walking up to your front door.”

She also says to reach out to others for help. “Through the power of people we can make change and we can uncover things that people do to make our world a negative place.”
