Unsung Hero: Local man devotes time to volunteering, has made 800 blood donations

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Congratulations to our Unsung Hero, Bob Hungerschafer. He was nominated for the award by his son, Tyler. Take a look at his story.

I would like to nominate my dad, Bob Hungerschafer as an unsung hero for his many years of volunteer service and contributions to community. Volunteering and donating with the Red Cross; the Boys and Girls Clubs; Stroke Recovery Association of BC; VGH Cell Separator Unit for The Leukemia/Bone Marrow Transplant Program of BC; the Be The Match bone marrow registry, the Food Bank; the Family History Centre; The Health & Safety Committee and the Richmond Crisis Centre (CHIMO).

Shortly after he remarried, his step-son was found to have stage-4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and he spent that summer at Ronald McDonald House helping his new step-son through treatment and recovery. His step-son also has Asperger’s Syndrome, so my dad took several parenting and special education classes qualifying as a foster parent, so he could learn how to effectively assist and advocate for his step-son. He even captured an escaped prisoner pending trial for murder when he saved an old man being mugged by the escaped prisoner.

In 2003, he set the Guinness World Record for the most blood donations when he reached 500 donations and on March 3, 2018 he made his 800th donation. He hopes to make 1,500 donations in his lifetime. Our dog Athena and cat Kitty also set world records for donating blood.

Alpine Credits is acknowledging Bob with $500 to say thanks for stepping up and they’re also making a $1,000 donation to the Ronald McDonald House Children’s Charity.
