Dad of Humboldt survivor wants to speak to imposter posing as his son, asking for money

CALGARY (NEWS 1130) – The father of an injured Humboldt Bronco says he’d like to speak to whoever set up a fake twitter account and GoFundMe to impersonate his son.

Ryan Straschnitzki is still recovering in hospital after he was paralyzed from the chest down in a deadly bus crash earlier this month.

An imposter–whose account has since been deleted–was tweeting out thanks to supporters and asking for more money.

“It was funny, I was warning Ryan that this will probably happen, and it happened,” says Tom Straschnitzki.

“I woke up about five and then just kind of went through the Twitter to check out the hockey game from yesterday and somehow just stumbled upon it.”

He says he told his son about the account, knowing it couldn’t have been him. Tom says Ryan was panicked and didn’t want his teammates to think he was asking for money behind their backs.

“That was Ryan’s main concern, was his teammates getting mad at him even though he had nothing to do with it,” he says.

“We had to calm him down on that, because, you know, he wears his heart on his sleeve so he just panicked. So I said ‘Don’t worry, son, we’ll take care of it’.”

The account was quickly pulled down after several people reported it.

“As long as they catch them, that’s my thought.”
