Greenpeace demonstrators ramp up Trans Mountain protests

DELTA (NEWS 1130) – Greenpeace has ramped up its protests against the Trans Mountain expansion.

In an industrial area in Delta off River Road on Thursday, two demonstrators climbed up on a large tunneling machine they claim is essential for the project to move ahead on Burnaby Mountain.

They’ve since left the site, according to Delta Police, but not before dropping a banner reading “Protect Water, Stop Pipelines,” across the machine.

They say the pipeline “poses too great a threat to the land, air, and water.”

This comes after months of ongoing protests at the Kinder Morgan facility gates in Burnaby, where demonstrators have taken to blocking the entrance on a number of different occasions.

More than 200 people have been arrested for defying an injunction, requiring all protesters stay at least five meters away from the company’s facility.

Kinder Morgan previously announced it was suspending all non-essential activities and spending related to the project, and issued an ultimatum to Ottawa. The company wants the project to be given a green light by the BC, Alberta and federal governments by no later than May 31st and wants financial security.
