Vision Vancouver reverses decision, will run mayoral candidate

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – In an about-face from a previous announcement, political party Vision Vancouver says it will run a candidate in the city’s upcoming election after all.

Exactly a month ago, the party said it was holding off on opening its mayoral nomination process, and open to the idea of collaborating with other parties and endorsing an independent. The decision, however, was not final.

In a release sent Friday afternoon, the party says it was contacted by a variety of potential candidates who wanted to run under the Vision banner.

“After receiving multiple expressions of interest from potential candidates for mayor, and based on the level of interest from candidates committed to Vision Vancouver, our members, and our principles, we are pleased to let our members know that we will be opening nominations for a Vision Vancouver candidate for mayor in the upcoming 2018 municipal election,” the release read.

The release singled out opposition party Non-Partisan Association as a direct threat.

“We believe there are individuals wishing to run as Vision’s mayoral candidate who would appeal to a broad segment of progressive voters in Vancouver and are best positioned to defeat the NPA in October,” it read.

Interested candidates have until May 11 to apply before the party votes on its next leader on June 24.

The party says it still hasn’t figured out how many council, park and school Board seats it will run for. Nomination deadlines for those positions have not been set.

Vancouver will elect a new mayor and 10-person council on Oct. 20.
