$750 fine for 2017 excessive speeder

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A $750 fine has been levied against a West Vancouver man caught excessively speeding across the Lions Gate bridge last July.

The posted speed limit on the bridge is 60 kilometres an hour, and Yihao Wang was caught going 210 kilometres an hour. Wang could still be allowed to drive again this fall after his prohibition ends, but he will not be driving the Ferrari he was caught speeding in.

His lawyer says the 23-year-old from West Vancouver sold the luxury car and now he’s waiting to hear from the BC Superindendent of Motor Vehicles.

“The Superintendent has already considered all the facts of the case and imposed the driving prohibition, so nothing has really changed in terms of facts. I would be surprised if the superintendent added something to it.” says lawyer David Baker.

Wang told the judge through a translator that he is “really sorry” and it wouldn’t happen again–but he’s been caught driving recklessly prior to this offence. Baker says Wang is ashamed of his behaviour and we should believe him when he says it wont happen again.

“Anytime somebody speeds excessively its fortunate there’s no accident,” says Baker. “There was no accident here, there was no near-accident.”

Wang left the courthouse with a mask covering his face.
