Public meeting in Delta tonight, following sexual assault last month

DELTA (NEWS 1130) – Police have been going door-to-door in Delta because of a sex assault last month. Officers want to make people aware of a public meeting tonight regarding the attack.

Delta Police Chief Neil Dubord says they’ll be discussing how to improve safety at Sunbury Park.

“Parks and rec will be out there and they will be providing a little bit of a plan as what they’re doing with some of the bush clearing there. I don’t think the design of the park is being changed dramatically but certainly, I know that we are cleaning it up — making it brighter and making it more open.”

On April 12, a woman was walking in the park when she was attacked from behind. Dubord says the suspect is still out there and people are concerned.

“We were seeing on Facebook — certainly in relation to Sunbury Park — that people were feeling kind of uneasy on that and we want to make sure that anyone can enjoy and have confidence in their community and have confidence in the safety of that particular area.”

Dubord says there’s no reason to believe another attack will happen at Sunbury Park.

The suspect in last month’s assault is described as a white man in his mid-30s. He was 5’10” tall and had short brown hair, a full beard, and a thin looking face. He had a medium build and was wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans.

Tonight’s meeting is at 6:30 p.m. at the Public Safety Building on 84th Avenue.
