‘BC should be careful what it asks for’: Notley turns up Trans Mountain pressure

CALGARY (NEWS 1130) – As a looming deadline on the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion draws near, Alberta’s premier is turning up the pressure to get it built in light of the BC government’s opposition.

Rachel Notley will spend $1.2 million on a billboard campaign to largely target the Lower Mainland. She’s also moving forward on a bill that could restrict oil to BC.

“We will marshal every constitutional and legal argument available to make sure BC does not succeed in playing chicken with the rest of the Canadian economy,” says Notley.

“BC should be, quite frankly, careful what it asks for,” she adds.

She expects Bill 12 will be voted on next week, but hopefully they won’t have to use it. Notley notes Alberta will be seeking full status in the ongoing BC reference case.

Along with the billboards, Notley will be writing an op-ed in BC media, in response to critical comments made by Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson.

Kinder Morgan has set a May 31 deadline to indicate whether it will move forward with the project. Notley asked why she is confident that construction will happen on time.

“That’s something that I can’t really get into a lot of detail on. But as I’ve said repeatedly, we are hard at work in having good conversations with the federal government and Kinder Morgan.”

She was also asked whether her party would consider splitting from the federal NDP, given the difference in opinion on the project.

“It’s not a thing that’s on top of mind for me right now. What’s top of mind is doing my job for Albertans, standing up for the province, getting this pipeline built.”
