Half of Canadians embarrassed, stressed about finances: survey

CALGARY (NEWS 1130) – The debt is piling up and Canadians are stressed about it.

A new survey finds four in ten Canadians ranked money as their greatest stress, over personal health, relationships, and work.

Kelly Keehn is a personal financial educator and says money problems are really hitting a lot of Canadians.

“Money can affect a person’s mental health, absolutely. Obviously the stress levels within this survey are revealing that,” says Keehn. “It tells us that it’s no surprise. I mean, today, half of Canadians are just $200 away from not being able to pay their bills.”

The poll also says 51 per cent are actually embarrassed about their financial situations. Keehn says–don’t be.

“Other people are in the same boat…you’re not alone, a lot of [people] are really struggling.”

She says it’s not too late to take control and crunch the numbers, and there are people out there to help.

“I’m hearing from a lot of people… that they’re trying to get themselves together before they go see their banker or their certified financial planner, or their non-profit credit counselor, and those are the folks that you should be going to see,” she says, adding if you it’s your first time looking for help you should seek out a non-profit credit counselor.
