Police investigate sex assault in Abbotsford

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – Police in Abbotsford are hoping you can help them find a suspect who is said to have been involved in a sexual assault Friday evening.

Investigators say a woman was crossing Pauline Street near South Fraser Way when she was confronted by a man.

“You hear some screaming, next thing you know you’ve got a man in your face,” Constable Ian Macdonald tells NEWS 1130. “He’s saying completely rude and sexually-charged things to you, and he’s latched on to you. Your instinct is going to be fight or flight, and I’m glad for her it was a bit of both.”

The woman was able to break free and the man took off.

“I can’t think of a situation where you’re undergoing that kind of terror, your ability to break free and then find a place of safety was absolutely necessary for what she was encountering.”

Abbotsford police are now looking for video and any possible witnesses who may have seen the attack take place.

Macdonald says there are businesses in the area, and police are now looking for witnesses as well as surveillance video to help them in their investigation.

“Certainly we’re hoping that someone will come forward with some additional information. Maybe they know the suspect, maybe they were spending time with the suspect or maybe they saw the incident. Certainly we’re hopeful that through those businesses we’ll either find a witness or we’ll find some valuable video tape.”

The suspect is described as a Caucasian man in his 30s. He’s believed to be about 5’11” tall with wavy, brown, shoulder-length hair.

He was wearing sunglasses, a light-coloured shirt and tan shorts at the time of the attack.
