Woman who died in ocean near Tofino was in town for daughter’s wedding: reports

TOFINO – Tragedy has struck the community of Tofino, where a woman died after she was pulled from the water over the weekend.

Police were called yesterday morning to a report of a woman in distress in the ocean. Crews arrived and tried to save her, but she did not survive.

The death is not considered supicious.

The woman was reportedly in town for her daugher’s wedding. Victoria Emon, who is from the Okanagan, told Westerly News the woman was her mother, Ann Wittenberg.

The wedding was apparently scheduled for later that same day; and the couple went ahead with the nuptials, as it was what Wittenberg would have wanted.

In February, a 24-year-old man died in the same area after a surfing incident.
