Squamish mayor files gas price complaint with the Competition Bureau

SQUAMISH (NEWS 1130) – Fed up with her community paying what she says are the highest gas prices before taxes in BC, the Mayor of Squamish has filed a complaint to the Competition Bureau.

Patricia Heinztman believes gas stations in the area are taking advantage of the fact that her community isn’t included in the TransLink tax.

The tax, applied throughout Metro Vancouver, is 17 cents per litre.

“We should be at least, you know, eight or nine cents cheaper if not the full amount but we’re often comparable if only one or two cents cheaper,” she says. “We’re usually only a couple cents less than the Metro Vancouver area that has the additional TransLink tax.”

Heinsztman points to Abbotsford which is also not included in the tax, but has cheaper gas than Squamish–a go-to place to tank up on the drive to Whistler.

“It smells a little fishy and we’d like to see if the competition bureau can have a look at make sure Squamish citizens are being fairly charged for gas.”

She adds it’s been a long standing issue in her community that has only gotten worse lately.
