Crews battle fast-growing wildfire near Kamloops

KAMLOOPS (NEWS 1130) – Crews are trying to get a handle on an out-of-control wildfire burning near Kamloops.

The BC Wildfire Service says the Allie Lake fire, which was an estimated 800 hectares in size yesterday, is now about 2,100 hectares.

Crews are fighting the blaze from the ground and air, deploying more than 70 firefighters, four helicopters, air tanker support and several pieces of heavy equipment.

“The BC Wildfire Service urges the public to please pay particular attention to the fire danger rating in your region and adjust your activity and weekend plans accordingly,” the BCWS says. “Category 2 and Category 3 burning is currently prohibited in areas of the fire centre below 1,200-metre elevation.”

Meanwhile, the Xusum Creek fire, which is burning west of Lillooet near Anderson Lake, is now about 440 hectares. A day earlier, it was estimated at 25 hectares.

That fire is also classified as “out of control.” An evacuation alert is in place for homes in the area.

The BC Wildfire Service says the unseasonably hot and dry conditions across the province means we aren’t necessarily seeing more fires than usual, but the ones that have been sparked have been aggressive ones.

Any rain between now and Canada Day is expected to significantly shape this wildfire season.
