One person killed in dramatic crash in Maple Ridge

MAPLE RIDGE (NEWS 1130) – One person and their dog have died after a serious crash on Golden Ears Way in Maple Ridge Tuesday.

It happened around 7:30 p.m. in the area just east of 203rd Street, and shut down the route for several hours.

“Tragically, one of the drivers from the vehicle died as a result of the collision along with his dog that was in the vehicle,” explains Ridge Meadows RCMP Sgt. Brenda Gresiuk. “So there were three other vehicles involved in the collision with multiple serious injuries to the drivers. Police are still working in putting those pieces of that puzzle together.”

The fourth driver is said to have only suffered minor injuries, and did not require hospitalization.

The victim, who was driving a Toyota Tacoma, has only been identified as a 38-year-old man from Pitt Meadows.

There’s no word on what caused the dramatic crash, but Gresiuk says investigators are still working to determine that information.

“There’s a lot of police work to be done here. We always consider everything; road conditions, weather, speed, whether there was drugs or alcohol. We consider all of that and that’s a part of a police investigation so although the scene has been reopened, there’s still a significant amount of police investigative work to be done.”

Witnesses took to Twitter last night describing a dark-coloured pick-up truck speeding and weaving through traffic, before colliding with another vehicle.

Footage of the aftermath shows debris spread up the road, and a tangled wreck involving the two vehicles, one with a white sheet draped over the driver’s side.

The coroner was called in.

Ridge Meadows RCMP shut down Golden Ears Way for hours overnight, but the route — between 203rd and 210th — has since re-opened.
