SCARBOROUGH, ON. (NEWS 1130) – A break in the case for investigators in the Toronto-area after two little girls were shot while on a playground in Scarborough. It happened at about 5 p.m. local time on Thursday.

Today, police announced Sheldon Eriya, 21, of Markham was picked up by investigators in Pickering. He has been charged with several offences including two counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

The girls, aged five and nine, are still recovering and remain in stable condition. Their injuries are no longer considered life-threatening. A third person also suffered some minor injuries but was treated at the scene at the time of the shooting.

Police estimated at the time that about a dozen kids were playing in the park when the shots rang out. They confirmed previously that a man approached the park and opened fire at a man nearby, instead hitting two of the children.

“Some cowards came into this neighbourhood and opened fire into a playground,” said Police Chief Mark Saunders, who added that the children were not the intended targets. An adult male that was in the park was believed to be the intended target.

Police continue to search for at least two other people in connection to the shooting.

A vehicle linked to the crime was recovered on Friday.
