Canadians celebrate mom more than dad: survey

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Poor dad. A new survey finds Canadians probably make more effort to celebrate Mother’s Day than they do Father’s Day and apparently they’re feeling a little neglected.

“Eighty-seven per cent of Canadian dads agree Mother’s Day usually does outshine Father’s Day but when it comes to spending, we do see that families and children are going to be spending a pretty penny. In fact, they’re going to be spending upwards of a $119 on the overall experience for dad this year,” says Sara Skirboll with RetailMeNot.ca.

Take into account the fact nearly one-in-three fathers said their feelings would be hurt if their kids celebrated Mother’s Day more than Father’s Day.

The survey also found novelty gifts like barbecue aprons are great and they may smile through opening yet another tie and pair of socks, but it’s not on their wish list. Many kids say they’ll be buying dad event tickets, dinner, a gift card, sporting goods or a free round of golf this year.

Another interesting tidbit from the survey found the majority of dads (79 per cent) agree that they don’t expect a gift on Father’s Day as much as mothers do on Mother’s Day.
