SQUAMISH (NEWS 1130) – A search has ended in tragedy as the RCMP’s Dive Team has recovered the body of a 20-year-old Delta man who went into distress in Alice Lake on Wednesday night.
RCMP confirm they were called at about 8:15 p.m., when a bystander heard people screaming about a man in the water and that they were trying to find him.
“He was there, camping at the park and swimming with friends,” explains Corporal Sascha Banks with Squamish RCMP. “They stated that he went in the water and just was in distress. They tried to get to him, but they were unable to get to him before he went under.”
Mounties, search and rescue crews, fire services and the BC Ambulance Service were called in.
“Four members of the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team (URT) arrived at Alice Lake this morning and shortly after 1 p.m. the team located the body of the man,” explains Banks. “At this time we are informing the public that Alice Lake is still closed until all units are clear from the area.”
RCMP have contacted the man’s family, but his name is not being released at this time.
The campground at Alice Lake is open.
