Two-alarm fire damages Langley u-pick farm

LANGLEY (NEWS 1130) – Both fire and water damage have left a well-known u-pick farm south of the Fraser River badly damaged.

Flames broke out early Sunday morning at Driediger Farms around 72nd Avenue and 240th Street.

Rhonda Driediger is the owner and tells NEWS 1130 she was alerted by one of the workers that lives on site.

She adds the flames broke out in an area called “fresh plant” where they typically pack fresh blueberries. “It looks like it started up on the mezzanine close to where there is an electrical panel.”

Luckily, no one was inside at the time of the fire and she adds no one was hurt.

Unfortunately, it’s unclear just how much the damage is and can be saved.

“We can’t really tell right now. We just have to wait and see how much equipment is salvageable and whether we can continue to use it, and how much of the building is salvageable but we do have emergency continuation plans already.

We’ll just spend the next couple of weeks making sure we’re ready for the season that’s coming.”

Township of Langley Fire Deputy Chief Russ Jenkins says when crews arrived shortly after 5 a.m., the building was engulfed. He adds the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation and crews are expected to be at the scene throughout the day.
