Vancouver records 10th, 11th homicides of 2018

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver Police are investigating a pair of homicides on the Downtown Eastside.

The first is related to a stabbing that happened during a fight on June 23rd in the area of West Hastings and Abbott Street. Investigators say 26-year-old Abeal Negussie Abera of Surrey was taken to hospital, but died from his injuries last night.

No arrests have been made, but police say they believe this was not a random attack. There’s no risk to the public, police add.

The VPD is hoping to speak with anyone who may have information about this incident. You’re asked to call police at 604.717.2541.

This was Vancouver’s 10th homicide of the year.

Woman arrested, released in connection with 11th homicide of 2018

Meantime, investigators are also looking into Vancouver’s 11th homicide of 2018, after another 26-year-old was stabbed and killed on the Downtown Eastside.

Shane John Tolmie has been identified as the victim in this case. The VPD says he was stabbed in an apartment in the area of Abbott near West Pender streets just after midnight on Friday and was taken to hospital. He died this morning.

A 24-year-old woman was arrested at the scene, but has since been released. Police say Tolmie and the woman knew each other.
