Pipeline protesters continue to hang from Ironworkers Memorial Bridge

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Protesters who rappelled down the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge Tuesday morning are still hanging in hammocks underneath the bridge.

North Vancouver RCMP has taken over the case. Cpl. Richard de Jong said the activists could be charged with mischief.

“If they interfere with vessel traffic, under the Canada shipping Act there is also a charge, so none of that has been determined,” de Jong said. “There’s been no conversation really to speak of so right now they are literally just hanging off the bridge.”

The Greenpeace activists are calling it an “aerial bridge blockade.”

The environmental group is protesting against the proposed Trans Mountain pipeline expansion by attempting to block tanker traffic. They claimed ot have stopped one tanker so far but Kinder Morgan says its operations haven’t been affected.

In a statement, Greenpeace Canada is asking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to “live up” to his promises on climate change and Indigenous reconciliation.
