TSB at scene of deadly plane crash near Sechelt airport

SECHELT (NEWS 1130) – The Transportation Safety Board has arrived at the crash site after the pilot was killed when a plane went down near the Sechelt airport yesterday afternoon.

Yanick Sarazin with the TSB isn’t sure how long the investigation will take.

“The investigator will be on scene today. If more is needed, we’ll take the time that’s needed to gather the information that we need in order to assess the accident.”

Sarazin says just because the Piper Cherokee 140 is a single-engine-aircraft doesn’t mean the investigation is easy.

“Every investigation has its set of complexity. At this time, it’s too early to tell… [Until we] look at the aircraft, the engine, the wings, if it had fuel — all sorts of components like that, it’s hard to say.”

He adds they’ll also be looking to speak with anyone who saw the plane go down.

“Witness accounts is always something that we look for and it’s always considered in any type of action… Something else that we look at is videos. Today, there’s a lot of cameras — CCTV cameras, even weather cameras. So, that is also something that we will be gathering.”

Three passengers survived the crash after plane went down in a forest just a few minutes after take off.
