Temperatures rising: Special weather statement issued for Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley

UPDATE: The special weather statement has ended for the Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley regions. However, Environment Canada warns the hot weather is expected to continue throughout this weekend and into next week. You’re reminded to check your local forecasts and to take the necessary precautions to protect yourselves from the heat.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Make sure you’re well prepared for the heat around Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley — temperatures are expected to rise.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for both regions, saying hot weather is expected throughout southern BC.

Daytime temperatures could approach the high-twenties or low-thirties along the coastal region. If you’re heading inland, you can expect temperatures to hit as high as the mid-thirties.

“While hot and sunny conditions are welcomed news for most, Environment and Climate Change Canada and Medical Health Officers are reminding residents to take precautions to protect themselves from the heat,” the statement reads.

Staying hydrated and keeping cool are just a few reminders, by either drinking cold beverages — preferably water — and spending time indoors where there is air-conditioning, Environment Canada says.

Other ways you can stay cool include dressing for the weather, protecting yourself from the sun with hats and sunglasses, and staying in the shade or using sunscreen with SPF 30 or more.

Environment Canada also recommends chicking in on others who may live alone or who are at a “high risk of severe heat related illness”. That includes the elderly, those who aren’t able to leave home, or those who don’t have acess to air conditioned places.

You’re also reminded to never leave children or pets alone in hot cars.

The following cities are covered by this special weather statement:

  • The City of Vancouver
  • Burnaby and New Westminster
  • Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
  • Surrey and Langley
  • Richmond and Delta
  • The North Shore (West Vancouver and North Vancouver)
  • Chilliwack
  • Hope
  • Abbotsford

Special weather statements because of high temperatures have also been issued for parts of the interior, as well as Vancouver Island.
