Canada Cup a home run for local business

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Hundreds of softball players will be competing in Surrey this weekend, and that’s is welcome news for hotels and restaurants.

The 2018 Canada Cup kicked off Friday at Softball City, with games also being played in Cloverdale and at Sunnyside Park.

Tournament Chair Greg Timm says with nearly 100 teams competing over 10 days, Surrey is bound to benefit.

“It’s a big tournament this year. Including our youth teams we have 91 teams, so 1,200 athletes,” he says.

“In past years our study tells us that we have over $20-million in economic impact. We’ll have over 4,000 people [players and spectators, etc.] in town in the Fraser Valley.”

Timm adds there’s some extra excitement this year since softball is once again an Olympic sport, and teams are getting ready to qualify for the 2020 summer games.
