Man poked by syringe in hollow fence: Victoria Police

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – Police in Victoria have issued a warning after they say a man was pricked by a syringe that was inside a fence post.

Police say they were called to reports a man had been hurt in the area of Yates near Douglas Streets.

When examining the post the man reportedly hurt himself on, officers say they found a needle wedged “within the hollow post such that it could cause harm to someone who inserted his or her fingers into the hollow space.”

Though his injuries are considered to be non-life-threatening at this time, the man has been offered medical attention and investigators say he will be following up to determine how serious they are.

In January, a child was pricked with a syringe in a McDonald’s restaurant not far from where the victim was poked on Friday, an area police say has several addiction and homeless service providers nearby.

In that case, police believe the syringe was improperly disposed of following an emergency insulin injection.

According to Victoria Police, this is the fourth or fifth syringe-related incident officers there have dealt with in the past several months. However, they could not say if investigators believe there is a specific offender involved or a string of purposeful prickings.

Don’t place your hands where your eyes haven’t been, police warn. “A visual inspection of a hollow space may save you from injury.”

Investigators would like to hear from you if you have any information about this incident. You can call the Victoria PD’s non-emergency line at 250.995.7654, or Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.8477.
