Symphony at Sunset kicks off VSO’s 100th season

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’ll combine beautiful music with the setting summer sun.

Symphony at Sunset is coming to downtown Vancouver this evening, giving you a civilized way to celebrate the season as well as a longstanding institution in the city’s arts scene.

Imagine sitting on the grass at Sunset Beach Park with the sun setting over the water, and the sounds of Vivaldi floating through the warm, evening air. The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is kicking off its 100th season with a free concert to thank you for the last century.

Kelly Tweeddale with the Vancouver Symphony Society says there will be something for everyone, including classical music from different decades — and some more popular favourites.

“You’ll hear a little bit of Star Wars you’ll hear suites from the opera Carmen, you’ll hear a few waltzes,” she says.

There will be lots of seating, so bring a chair or a picnic blanket to set up.

“There will be areas to actually take out your blanket and if you bring a lawn chair there will be a section for you to set up your lawn char as well.”

Student ensembles with the VSO School of Music will start off the event with a performance at 7:15 p.m. The orchestra is set to begin at 8:30 p.m.
