Women’s cycling growing at Tour de White Rock: organizer

WHITE ROCK (NEWS 1130) – Driving around White Rock could be a challenge this weekend–there will be a number of road closures because of a cycling event which continues to grow.

Brian Wiebe, who speaks for the Tour de White Rock, says within the last 10 years there were times when women’s races were at risk of being cancelled because of low registration.

That’s not really the case any more.

“Where we’ve really been happy to see the growth is in women’s cycling,” he says.

“The interest on the women’s side of cycling is just huge. It’s not as big in terms of registrations numbers as the men just yet, but it’s really, really, robust.”

Today, watch out for road closures around White Rock Elementary, while tomorrow, a big chunk of Marine Drive will be blocked off. If you’re a spectator, Wiebe warns the hot weather may have athletes pedaling a little slower than usual.

“The men and women start just around 10 o’clock in the morning so they end up riding the most grueling hills of White Rock around noon time, which is traditionally the hottest time of the day,” he says.

“We might not see the pace similar to what we’ve seen at some of the events earlier B.C. Superweek where the temperatures haven’t been as hot.”

The Tour de White Rock is the finale of B.C. Superweek.
