Development application to save Vancouver’s Hollywood Theatre going to council

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A landmark on Vancouver’s West Side could be given a new lease on life as a plan to revitalize the 83-year-old Hollywood Theatre goes to a public hearing next week.

The proposal includes preserving the venue and adding a development to an adjacent lot.

The idea is to secure irrevocable heritage designation for the movie house and then transfer its development potential for a six-storey mixed-use building next door.

West Broadway Business Improvement Association president Sabrina Faas says she welcomes any plan to see the Hollywood back in business.

“It’s definitely fabulous that it is getting revitalized, people are going to be using it, and enjoying the space, and it helps all the other spaces,” she says.

Faas notes the proposal is a good balance between preserving heritage while adding density to the area.

“People need places to live and if it works beside the actual theatre, it could work together quite well,” Faas says. “If it can be done in such a way that there’s density and still spaces for theatre or retail or what-have-you, I think it’s a good compromise.”

The public hearing will take place on July 17 at 6 p.m. at Vancouver City Hall.
