Unsung Hero: Local teen lifts Surrey seniors’ spirits

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Congratulations to our Unsung Hero Amy de Boer. She was nominated for the award by John de Boer. Take a look at her story.

Amy is currently involved in a “Gentle Touch” program at Zion Park Manor for the elderly in Cloverdale. She started out assisting with tea service, activity set-up, and bingo. She noticed that some of the residents were unable to participate in the activities because they had lost the ability to communicate, so she approached the Director of Recreation and Volunteers about bringing her pet rabbit for some one on one time with some of the less communicative residents.

She visits every week throughout high school with her rabbit Charlie and appears to thoroughly enjoy her time with the residents. She has made an impact on their quality of life. The staff at Zion Park Manor have told her that these residents now seem to smile more, are more alert, and try to communicate with her and her rabbit.

They look forward to her weekly visits and has really developed a passion for helping other people and genuinely enjoys interacting with the residents at Zion.

Volunteering has shaped her into a more compassionate, responsible, confident and empathetic person. Her weekly visits allow her to develop leadership skills as well as enhance her problem solving skills.

Alpine Credits is acknowledging Amy with $500 to say thanks for stepping up and they’re also making a $1,000 donation to the Ronald McDonald House Children’s Charity.
