Burnaby Mountain protesters ‘not going anywhere’ despite eviction notice

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – Protesters say they have no plans on following orders from the City of Burnaby and leaving their campsite near Kinder Morgan’s facility.

They’ve been given 72 hours to gather their tents, take down their signs and leave, but some of the members of “Camp Cloud” say that’s not going to happen.

Johnny Lee has been at the site for more than three months and says he’s not going anywhere.

“I’m going to stick around because I’m tired of the Colonial system pushing Indigenous Peoples rights aside and destroying our ecosystem and our ability to live on this planet,” he said.

“I’ll probably be sitting there carving my artwork or tending the fire or perhaps continuing building on the cabin.”

He said there’s nothing anyone can do to make him leave, noting he is prepared to face the consequences.

“I have that right as an Indigenous person on this land, they have no right.”

Lee added the group will not stop unless the project is cancelled.

The city has said it will look at other legal options if campers don’t comply.
