Highway 97 partially closed between Peachland and Summerland due to wildfire

SUMMERLAND (NEWS 1130) – A wildfire closed Highway 97 in both directions between Summerland and Peachland Wednesday afternoon.

The highway has since reopened to single lane alternating traffic with RCMP escort.

Drive BC is warning commuters to expect heavy delays.

Information Officer Nicole Bonnett says the 50-hectare Mount Conkle fire is burning roughly eight kilometres southwest of Summerland.

“We have 42 personnel on site, air tankers, and helicopters,” she says.

Bonnett says the fire is not threatening any homes but visibility is poor in the area.

“It’ll just kind of depend on what the smoke is doing in the area and how it’s affecting the visibility along the highway there.”

She adds this fire was sparked by lightning Tuesday night
