Hundreds of new campsites available around BC

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – If you’re planning a camping trip or two this summer there are some new spots for you to check out around BC.

More than 430 new campsites are now available across the province.

The additional campsites are located in the areas that see the highest demand; the Kootenay Rockies, the Thompson Okanagan, the Lower Mainland, and parts of Vancouver Island.

“With the expansion, there are now 11,000 camping spaces at 1,100 recreation sites around the province, for those who enjoy a more rustic experience,” Minister of Forests Doug Donaldson says in a release.

The announcement of additional campsites comes on the eve of Canada’s Parks Day, which happens on the third Saturday of July every year. The day highlights the importance of parks, and how they maintain healthy ecosytems. Other environmental intiatives are also explored through Canada’s Parks Day.

BC’s Minister of Environment George Heyman says the addition of hundreds of new campsites across the province will allow people to spend even more time in provincial parks.

“The additional campsites, combined with upgrades to existing facilities, will improve the overall experience of B.C.’s natural beauty and provide a range of camping opportunities for everyone to enjoy,” he says.

Upgrades and additions to existing sites include new roads, water taps, electricity, accesssible toilets and more.

According to the provincial government, there are more than 21 million visits to BC’s parks every year. It adds BC Parks manages the “third-largest parks system in North America.”

350 new campsites were added to BC Parks and rec sites last year.
