Vancouver Whitecaps ‘kick off’ Pride celebrations

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – While their fans are known for singing “White is the Colour, Soccer is the Game,” it’ll look more like a rainbow at BC Place Saturday night.

The Whitecaps will be recognizing the LGBTQ community during their match against Minnesota United.

Team president Bob Lenarduzzi says players will be wearing jerseys with rainbow coloured numbers.

“All the staff will also be incorporating it into the attire and our captain, in fact captains around the league, will have the arm band in the rainbow as well.”

It doesn’t end there. Lenarduzzi adds fans will also have a chance to help create a rainbow inside the stadium.

“Multicolour signs will be placed on all the seats to raise up during the full in-stadium visual display activation. It’s a celebration and this is, I believe, the third year that we’ve done it.”

The rainbow signs, however, is a new thing.

“[The celebration] has grown in stature from the time that we started and we get a great representation out from the community.”

So why not do this all during the Pride weekend next week? Lenarduzzi says it comes down to scheduling.

“Trying to coordinate our games into their schedule because we have the obviously the Lions play in the venue as well and then there’s other events… Maybe in the first year we may have had it on Pride day.”

Of course, there will be pre-match festivities on the Terry Fox Plaza, starting at 5:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.

Kick off is at 7:00 p.m.
