Clean up underway following Celebration of Light

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – While the Celebration of Light is over, the clean up is just getting started.

Kelly Guille, the Technical Director of Fireworks, says the barge used to light off the pyrotechnics needs to be cleared out.

“After each show we’ve got 10 night crew guys that come on and clean the site of the debris, pull all the empty cartridges out of the mortars and shell casings and things like that,” says Guille.

“My daytime crew comes back [today], we pack all the containers back up, inventory things, and we get it ready for off loading at Vancouver Pile Driving Limited on the 8th.”

Guille adds after a few days of cleaning up the barge, it should be ready to be towed out of English Bay by Wednesday to be stored until next year.

Meantime, Sergeant Jason Robillard with Vancouver Police says he’s happy with how the crowd behaved.

“I would characterize the crowd as being family-oriented and peaceful for the most part. We had very minor disturbance, but we did have lot of officers there,” says Robillard.

“We did have, obviously, liquor pour outs, probably at least over 100. This was out most crowded, busiest night we’ve had, the finale here. But things went smoothly for us.”

He says with the number officers are getting better and better at managing the large crowds at the fireworks shows since they do the event every year.
