Child rescued from 3rd-storey balcony, Abbotsford Police remind parents of window safety

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – A child is safe after being rescued from a precarious situation in Abbotsford Tuesday night.

It happened around 11 p.m. on Simon Avenue. Sgt Judy Bird says people called police to report a child crying on a third-storey “ornamental balcony.”

“Upon arrival, police did locate a four-year-old child crying on this balcony. Police gained access to the residence, as no one was answering the phone. We were able to take the child off of the balcony, where they were safe.”

Officers had a talk with the parents about window safety.

Bird says this time of year, it’s tempting to keep windows open. But it’s a serious danger for little ones.

“It’s hot. We have a heat wave. People are going to have their windows open. But we do have to remember that children and toddlers have this amazing gift to be able to climb and do all sorts of gymnastics… and fit through spaces that we never thought that they can fit through.

“It’s really important for us to make sure that we check our windows and make sure that we have our window guards on. We need to try to keep the children’s rooms’s [windows] closed. Have fans. Do whatever you have to do to keep the rooms cooler for us to be able to sleep, but make sure that it’s safe for our children.”

Bird this incident had a good outcome, but this could have ended with serious injuries for the child.

“We do applaud the neighbours in that area for giving the police a call and being diligent.”
