Wildfire destroys dozens of buildings in northern B.C.

A wildfire that ripped through Telegraph Creek has destroyed or damaged 27 structures in the remote northern community.

Rick Boehm of the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine says the buildings were lost in the flames on Monday night.

The Alkali Lake wildfire is an estimated 90 square kilometres. People in the area have been ordered out of their homes.

The nearby South Stikine River fire is 190 square kilometres, with an evacuation alert in effect. The six-square-kilometre Elbow Lake wildfire has prompted more evacuation orders.

Meanwhile, the Snowy Mountain wildfire south of Keremeos is still about 120 square kilometres. It is less than half contained. Evacuation orders and alerts are in effect there.

Temperatures are soaring across B.C. and the province has brought in a campfire ban on Haida Gwaii, as well as in Prince George, Mackenzie and Fort Saint James.
