Many animals brought to Lower Mainland BC SPCA shelters due to B.C. wildfires

BRITISH COLUMBIA (NEWS 1130) – As raging wildfires continue to impact communities across the province, the BC SPCA has been forced to evacuate two of its shelters.
Sixty animals had to be transferred from the shelters in Quesnel and Williams Lake shelters. Other shelters have also been placed on high alert.
“We were worried that the highways might be closed. We wanted to make sure we opportunity to move animals out in time,” said Mark Takhar with the BC SPCA.
A number of animals were brought to BC SPCA shelters in the Lower Mainland.
“Although we’re hoping we don’t see a repeat of last summer’s devastating wildfires, our staff, volunteers and officers are ready, willing and able to feed and comfort any animals in need of our help,” he said.
“We are looking for fosters, as well,” said Takhar. “Our shelters are starting to fill up. It’s important that we move some of these animals out of our shelters so that more can come in, especially when there’s possible evacuations happening.”
He notes the SPCA is asking for monetary donations, as well as beds and towels to ensure the needs of the animals are met.
“This is starting to become standard for us now… This year, we were prepared because we knew this was going to be almost a regular occurrance.”
The BC SPCA is also ramping up its efforts to help animals as people continue to be forced out of their homes due to the ongoing wildfires.
“Evacuations are a stressful time for everyone. This most certainly includes the animals we love and care for – they are no doubt feeling it,” Takhar said.
