‘It’s definitely a financial hit’: Peachland campground impacted by smoky skies

PEACHLAND (NEWS 1130) — As wildfire smoke fogs up much of the province, at least one campground in the Okanagan is seeing impacts on the number of people choosing to vacation there.

Bruce Britton with Todd’s RV and Camping in Peachland says they’ve been getting calls from people wondering whether they should still come.

He says their numbers are down about 20 per cent.

“Our campground holds approximately 80 campers, and we’re losing two or three a day usually,” Britton says.

He says he’s received multiple calls from people wondering whether or not they should even make the trip.

“Well, it’s definitely a financial hit for us. This is our prime time, we only have a short window of opportunity in the tourism business to bring in our profits.”

The head of the Peachland Chamber of Commerce also says the number of tourists is down compared to this time last year, but notes some shops seem to be seeing the benefits of people wanting to spend more time indoors.
