Mounties seize roughly 2,200 pounds of cocaine

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – One thousand and one bricks of cocaine — Mounties showed off one of the biggest drug seizures they’ve ever made.  Each of the bricks is a kilo of cocaine, working out to about 2,200 pounds.

It all arrived on a sailboat spotted by the military near Port Hardy March 6th.  RCMP Supt. Brian Cantera says there were several things that were amiss about the boat.  Named ‘The Huntress,’ is a 50-foot sailboat but the registration came back as a fishing vessel.

Cantera adds that before docking in Port Hardy, it was met off-shore by another boat.  “Upon searching the immediate area where the zodiac offload had taken place, 37 duffle bags containing 1,001 kilograms of cocaine was located.”

Two men have been arrested and the boats have been seized.  Police say the suspects sailed up here from Panama and have already appeared in court once.  Their next court date is in Victoria March 31st.
