Update: Six of ten stolen hockey jerseys recovered

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Six of the ten hockey jerseys stolen from the Dueck car dealership on Marine Drive on Sunday have been recovered.  Burnaby RCMP received a 9-1-1 call this afternoon, after people at a building at 3965 Kingsway found them in a bag dropped off in an elevator.

A dentist in the building, Dr. P.J. Murphy, says it didn’t take them long to figure out what they had.  “Part of the bag was open, and we could see looked to be a Canucks jersey in there.  Then police came and opened everything up and we could see that they were the stolen jerseys.”  A laptop also stolen from the car dealership was also recovered.

Dr. Murphy says no one got a good look at the guy who left them in the elevator, so he’s not sure how much help they’ll be in finding the thief.  The items are being processed by RCMP and will be returned to Dueck GM, so the jerseys can be auctioned off as part of the 2010 Scott Hetherington Charity Hockey Tournament to support B.C. Children’s Hospital.

Vancouver Police say the man in the surveillance video released yesterday has not yet been indentified. Anyone with information is asked to contact either the Burnaby RCMP at 604-294-7922, the Vancouver Police Property Crime Investigators at 604-717-2773, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Meanwhile, people are stepping forward to help the charity.  One man delivered three autographed team jerseys to the Vancouver Police Department headquarters, along with a hockey stick autographed by Pavel Bure.  VPD Constable Lindsey Houghton says the man wanted to make an anonymous donation, and wanted to do something for the kids.  “And he couldn’t express his outrage at the crime fast enough and he couldn’t express his desire to give these to us to support the charity.”

Rocky Mountain Sports has also donated five signed Canucks jerseys.  The Deuck car dealership reports they have been inundated with calls from people who want to help.

On Tuesday, Vancouver Police released video from surveillance cameras inside the dealership, showing a suspect who allegedly hid in a lunchroom until the dealership was closed, then found the jerseys and walked out with them.
