Avoiding summer social pit-falls

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The May Long weekend is considered the official kick-off to backyard BBQ season.  News1130 chatted with an expert who has tips to help you navigate social pit-falls.

Etiquette expert Lizzie Post with the Emily Post Institute says the first thing you should to do is let the host know you’re coming so he or she can make sure to have enough food and libations on hand.

Second, she says it is very important to ask if you should bring anything, whether its a side dish for the meal or your bathing suit for the pool.

So, what about that Speedo? Lizzie says leave that at home.  “I know in some areas the Speedo is the preferred gentleman’s swimwear and in other areas it’s not…like in Costa Rica they wear the tonga bikini bottom which shows quite a bit of cheek and I think the best thing to do is go with something slightly conservative if you’re not sure.”

She says it’s not a bad idea to ask if you can help out while at the party.  Post adds some hosts may feel you’re accusing them of ‘dropping the ball’ if you start helping without asking first.  Hosting? Make sure you assign tasks to your guests so you don’t end up with five pasta salads.
